Technology of the Future
OphirBlog
We are proud to share some very exciting news with you. We have just won the prestigious R&D 100 Award! Since 1963, R&D Magazine has selected the 100 most significant technologies of the year to honor with this distinction. In the past few decades, such innovations as the ATM, the printer and HDTV were recognized by R&D magazine as the keys to unlock the future. This year, Ophir Photonics’ BeamTrack has joined this impressive list of world-changing products.
BeamTrack is a line of power / position / size sensors that Ophir introduced about a year ago. These sensors combine the capability to measure power and single-shot energy with the new technology for laser beam size and position. This can be a huge timesaver when trying to center your laser beam, to give just one example of its many benefits.

Ophir’s BeamTrack™ Laser Power/Position/Size SensorsWin R&D 100 Award
July 30, 2012— North Logan, UT – The editors of R&D Magazine have announced the winners of the 50th Annual R&D 100 Awards. These awards recognize the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the market over the past year. This year’s winners include Ophir Photonics’ BeamTrack™ Laser Power/Position/Size Sensors.
“The R&D 100 Awards are well known as a benchmark of R&D excellence, identifying revolutionary technology that has just entered the market,” stated Gary Wagner, General Manager, Ophir Photonics (US). “We are honored that BeamTrack has received this year’s award. BeamTrack now joins the ranks of other winners like the automated teller machine (1973), fax machine (1975), and HDTV (1998).”
“BeamTrack is a unique series of thermal detectors that combine multiple functions in one device: power, energy, beam position, and beam size,” said Ephraim Greenfield, Director of Technology, Ophir Photonics. “The sensors also provide information on centering and beam wander, all in a compact unit that is the same size as single function detectors of the same power level. They are the first on the market to allow users to monitor all of a laser’s main parameters with a single device. Congratulations to the BeamTrack development team for a job well done.”
Team members included (left to right in group picture above): Yaakov Pechman, project manager; Jonathan Feust, electrical engineer; Shimon Elstein, physicist; Eliyahu Bender, physicist; Ilan Haber, R&D manager; Mark Ivker, physicist; and David Okun, electrical engineer.
The BeamTrack line includes five (5) power/position/size sensors.
• Two models with full beam size capability for powers up to 150W
• Two models with beam tracking capability for low powers to 3W
• Three models with full beam size capability covering other power levels: 10W, 250W, and 400W
Winners will be recognized at the R&D 100 Awards Banquet on Nov. 1, 2012, in Orlando, Fla. A list of winning innovations is on the R&D 100 Awards website: http://www.rdmag.com/
