FAQ: Sensors for Measuring Laser Power
Mark Slutzki
In this short “Basics” video we review in general how one goes about measuring laser beam power, so that you’ll have a clear understanding of what the different sensor types are, and when to use each type.

I’ve looked through the Ophir website extensively, but I find no information on how to use the PD300-CIE sensor that measures in LUX. Can you direct me to a resource?
Thanks
Hi Peter,
You’re right that we don’t seem to have any information other than the datasheet: https://www.ophiropt.com/laser–measurement/sites/default/files/PD300-BB_PD300-BB-50mW_PD300-CIE_BC20.pdf
I’ll try to correct this for the future, but in the meantime do you have any specific questions?
The PD300-CIE is used more or less like you would use any other Ophir sensors, except that here you need to make sure the source overfills the detector, since it measures lux = lumens / m2. The detector has a filter with a curve very close to the response of our eyes (again, see the datasheet).
The CIE sensor is only compatible with the following power meters: Vega, Nova II, LaserStar, and Nova/Orion. It is not compatible with PC interfaces. Using an appropriate power meter, you will get a display in lux (or mLux / kLux) instead of the usual Watts.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Dear Sir/Ma,
Please i have Orion TH a laser power meter but i could not get the sensors buy, therefore please let me know if i could get it from your company and the cost price of it.
Thank you
Victor
I’m not sure I understand what you’re looking for. You need a sensor to go with the Orion meter or you need a new meter?
If sensor: I need to know a little more about the laser you’re measuring to find the best sensor.
If meter: The Orion is an old meter we don’t sell anymore, you can find the new versions on our website (Nova, Nova II, Vega, StarLite)
Also, you might want to email your sales representative directly since I actually don’t have any price information: https://www.ophiropt.com/laser-measurement-instruments/contact/sales
Please i need sensor for Orion -TH Laser power meter therefore Please send me an invoice on it
Thanks
